M.PHIL. IN ECONOMICS (Evening
program)
M.PHIL PROGRAM
M.Phil
in Economics is a two years degree program consisting of 4 semesters. There
are 8 courses in all of 3 credit hours each per week making it a 24 credit
hours program. There are 12 credit hours assigned to thesis which turns the
whole M.Phil. into a 36 credit hours program.
OBJECTIVES
The
program has been designed with the following objectives in view:
Training
of students in high level Economics to improve their educational
qualifications.
To enhance professional ability of college/university teachers and to enable them to compete for
higher
posts.
To
develop research faculties of students of Economics.
To
acquaint M.Phil students with latest developments in various disciplines of
Economics.
ELIGIBILITY
A
candidate shall be eligible to apply if he/she has secured at least 2nd
division in M.A. Economics from a recognized university.
Non-subject students will not be allowed admission in M.Phil. The
Admission Committee of the Department, however, reserves the right to grant
admission to students of related fields such as Statistics and Mathematics and
will devise eligibility criteria for the same. Employees
of Government, autonomous
or semiautonomous
institutions or private organizations are also eligible to apply. Such
employees will be required to submit a 'NO OBJECTION' certificate from their
employers to be enrolled as a full-time student in this 2 years program.
Maximum age for admission will be 30 years, relaxable for in-service
employees.

Merit
will be determined on the basis of marks actually scored out of 200.
COURSES
AND DURATION
Semester
- 1
In this semester, there
will be four core courses of 3 credit hours each. This semester will start in
September each year and will finish
by the end of December.
Semester
- 2
The
second semester will begin in January and end in May each year. There will be
2 core courses and two optional courses of 3 credit hours each making it a 12
credit hours semester program.
Semester
-3 & 4
This
will begin in September of second year of M.Phil. Programme and will be
exclusively reserved for research. The research will finally end up in
the submission of a Research
Thesis which is assigned 12 credits hours. The whole M. Phil. (Economics)
programme therefore will be of 33 credits hours.

STUDENT
STATUS
He/she
will be a full-time student enrolled for on-campus studies. No student shall
undertake admission in another course of study during his/her enrolment as
M.Phil student.
FACILITIES
THE
DEPARTMENT ROUND-UP IN BRIEF NEW BUILDING
The
department was shifted to the newly constructed “Nawaz Sharif Block' during
summer vacation 1999. This has equipped the department with even better and
modern facilities in addition to resolving the space problem.
Economic
Journal
The
department publishes
a research
journal titled 'Government
College Economic Journal' subscribed by World
Bank and important
research institutions and
universities world-wide. It is also sent to various universities on exchange
basis. It is a bi-annual publication and carries research articles of scholars
from Pakistan and abroad.
ECONOMIC
SOCIETIES
There
are two economic societies in operation in the department at the
undergraduate and post-graduate
level.The undergraduate society is named as 'Mehbub-ulHaq Economics Society'
while the other is named as 'Post-graduate Economics Society'.
Educational and social functions are held under the auspices of these
societies which play an
important role in overall
personality development of students. The Ravians Economists Alumni was
revived in 2000 and held its 2nd annual dinner which attracted a great number
of Old Ravian Economists.
