OBJECTIVES

Training of students for higher degree to improve their qualification.

To enhance professional ability of college and university teachers to compete for higher positions.

To apprise M.Phil. students with latest developments in various fields of plant sciences.

To produce scientists who can meet the challenges of research and teaching of the 21st century.

Semester one: In this semester there will be three core courses each of 3 credit hours (2 credit hours for theory and 1 credit hour for practical), this semester will start from September and will end by December each year.

Semester two: The second semester is from January to May each year and students are required to take up 2 core and 1 optional courses of 3 credit hours each. Total will be 9 credit hours in second semester.

THESIS

This is a compulsory requirement for M.Phil. programme. A student who scores minimum GPA = 3.0 in comprehensive examination shall be allowed to prepare his/ her research synopsis for presentation before the Academic Committee for approval.

A student who fails to score minimum GPA = 3.0 in the comprehensive examination shall be screened out as a failed student. On the recommendation of the academic committee the student may be given a chance to appear in a re-sit examination.

Academic committee shall determine the date for the submission of thesis after 4th semester. Most probably. it will be the last week of May.

A Board of Examiners, proposed by the academic committee and approved by the Board of Studies, will evaluate the thesis in a viva-voce examination of the student. The minimum requirement for the approval of thesis is 3.0 grade points (B Grade). The Board may recommend a revision and one-time re-submission of the thesis under the prescribed rules.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must hold; M. Sc. degree (botany and related fields) with at least 2nd division from recognized university or an equivalent from any other recognized university. The Admission Committee of the department however, reserves the right of admission to any students of related fields such as biochemistry, microbiology or genetics and will be fully authorized to devise eligibility criteria for entry. Persons who are working in Government, autonomous, semi autonomous or private organizations are also eligible to apply. Such applicants will be asked to submit a 'No Objection' certificate from their employers. Maximum age for admission will be 30 years, relaxable in special cases.

ADMISSION CRITERION

Students once admitted to the department for M.Phil. will not be allowed to take admission elsewhere in any other diploma or degree. The admission criterion is as under:

FACILITIES

LIBRARY

Library in the Botany Department contains a good collection of books, Journals and other research material. In all, there are 5,022 books, some very good collection of journal titles including some journals of Linnean society and rich collection of research material on plant Morphology (bryophytes and angiosperms). In the main library of the college computing facilities include networked PCs linked tc wide range of software, communication and print services. There is an open-access to the Internet and links to a broad based information network connecting many national and international universities.

BIOLOGICAL SOCIETY

This Society was established in 1954. The founder members of the society were Dr Sultan Ahmed, Dr Muzzafar Ahmed, Dr Abu Baker, Prof. Ahsanul Islam and Prof. Wais Hussain Bokhari. The society started the publication of internationally reputed Journal "Biologia" and its first edition was published in June 1955. This Journal is subscribed by the libraries of various countries all over the world such as UK, USA, Canada, Indonesia, Brazil, Jordan, Sudan, France, Saudi Arabia, India and Netherland. Biological society does arrange various seminars and lectures. It often asks scholars to come around and deliver their scientific work t6 the students of Government College Lahore. Biological society has credit of publishing many monographs which are reference material and are constantly used by students and researchers.

LABORATORIES

The Labs in the department are fully equipped and students have access to flame photometer, muffle furnace, temperature controlled growth chambers and some high quality cooled incubators, centrifuge machines, ovens, fermenter, rotary microtomes and rotary shakers. Very advance type ot research is being carrie oul Lab. under the supervision of Dr. lkram - ul  Haq.

HERBARIUM

The oldest in town, Govt. College herbarium was established under the chairmanship of Prof. Kashyap in early 20th century and since then it has been playing an essential role in teaching and research of botany. It contains important flora of Pakistan present in preserved form in the herbarium. All botany students and outside researchers and visitors have access to the material with permission of the department. The plant collection is huge, comprises of several hundred of specimens including algae, fungi, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms. Most important among the collection are some rare Bryophytes collected by late Prof. Kashyap and a huge collection of mycological specimens done by late Dr. Sultan Ahmed.

BOTANICAL GARDEN

Botanical Garden at Bagh-e-Jinnah is an integral part of research and teaching at Botany department. In 1912 authorities gave 7 acres of land to Botany Department to be used purely for research purposes. Since then it is being controlled and looked after by the department. Garden contains wild flora and has number of rare and exotic species. This is particularly due to the untiring efforts of Dr Amin-ul-Haq Khan who is not only been taking interest in bringing the rare and important species in the garden but is also activating the building work in and around the botanical garden. The construction of newly built wall around the garden will eventually save rare Species and wild life from any outside disturbance. Green house, experimental fields, plant breeding enclosures and a seed bank are present in the Garden to facilitate researchers to carry out their research projects.
