DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

As in the case of a few other disciplines, M.Sc. teaching in the subject of Chemistry was undertaken jointly with the Chemistry Department of the Punjab University, until 1962, when the College started independent M.Sc. classes, in Chemistry. The present Chemistry Laboratory in the College is basically the same as it was in 1896, when it was built. It was completed in 1910 while further additions were made during 1910-11.

A galaxy of distinguished scientists have served the Department of Chemistry over the years. Prof A.S. Hemmy chaired both Physics and Chemistry Departments, as Professor of Science from 1898 - 1906. Mouat Jones of Balliol College of Oxford occupied the Chair of Chemistry, during 1912 - 1913. Dr. Dunnicliff joined the Department in 1917 and he also held the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry of the University of the Punjab. After he became Principal of the College, Bhai Man Singh succeeded him. He was the first Indian to be appointed Professor of Chemistry. He continued as Chairman from 1936 - 1947.

The following Professors have served the Department as Heads, since the creation of Pakistan.

Pir Ghulam Waris

Dr. Riffat Siddiqui

Dr. M.A. Azim

Prof. Mahboob Shah Hashmi

Dr. Ahsan Akhtar

Prof. Masud Hassan Khan

Dr. Anwar Chaudhari

Dr. M.A. Rehman

Dr. B.A. Khokhar

Dr. Nasim A. Bhatti

The Department of Chemistry has kept very high standards of instruction and research and it continues to produce M.Sc. graduates of calibre. At present, active research projects are in progress in the fields of Physical, Organic, Applied, Bio., Analytical and Inorganic Chemistry. Plans are afoot to start M.Phil and Ph.D. courses in the Department.

The Long-awaited New Chemistry Post-graduate Block has recently been commissioned on 7th January 1997 by the Principal. It is indeed the biggest single discipline block in the College. It houses newly equipped six modern laboratories (Physical, Inorganic, Organic, Analytical, Bio and Applied), two lecture rooms, a workshop, a computer room and an advanced research laboratory. This building has been built at an approximate cost of 30 million rupees and a hard engineering work of about six long years. The whole new building is provided with a new modern furniture. This legendary block has been built to preserve the 135 years old architectural heritages of the G.C. with ultra-modern facilities. It has been made possible by the ceaseless and personal efforts of our worthy Principal. We are committed to translate this building into academic excellence.
