DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

Studies in Science at Government College, Lahore, came alive with the appointment of Mr. J.C. Oman as Professor of Natural Philosophy in 1877-78. He was succeeded by Mr. A.S. Hemmy who held the combined Chair of Physics and Chemistry until 1906 when Professor Mouat Jones took over as Professor of Chemistry. Professor Hemmy retained the chair of Physics. By this time both subjects were being taught at Master’s level.

The process of evolution which had characterized the development of science of teaching in England was followed to some extent at Government College, Lahore. New well-equipped Physical Laboratories for Intermediate, B.Sc, and M.Sc. were built. The new building was completed in 1917.

Professor Hemmy became Principal in 1919 and Assistant Professor Lala Chatan Anand shared most of the burden in Physics. Mr. J.B. Seth was The head of the Department at that time of the division of the Indian subcontinent. The Punjab University Physics Department, in fact, started as an extension of the Physics Department of Government College, Lahore.

In the Post - Partition period, the Department was chaired by the following:

Qazi Abdul Rashid Maj. Shabbir Ahmed Qari
Dr. Rafi Muhammad Chaudhry Prof. Khawaja Altaf Hussain
Dr. Sultan Ali Chadhari Dr. Tahir Hussain (T.I)
Prof. Nasir Ahmed Qureshi Dr. Mannan Yasin
Prof. Ikram ul Haq Prof. Shiekh Aftab Ahmed
Prof. S.M. Akhtar Prof. S.M. Arif
Prof. Sh. Aftab Ahmed

Among these Professors who chaired the Department, Dr. R.M. Chaudhry was a towering figure. He was instrumental in the installation of 1.2 Mey Cockroft Walton Accelerator in the High Tension Laboratory, to carry out basic research in Atomic and Nuclear Physics. After retirement, Dr. Rafi continued as Director of High Tension Laboratory till 1965. Dr. Tahir Hussain played a key role in the revision, modernization of syllabi and writing of new text books on science subjects. Some of his talented students worked on nuclear tests project of Pakistan.

Prof. Sh. Aftab Ahmed developed a first-rate Advanced Electronics Laboratory and Electronics as the favourite subject of M.Sc. Physics students. During his headship, SSNTD Research Laboratory were established in Pakistan. To recognize the generous and uninterrupted help of distinguished scientist Dr. Hameed Ahmed Khan (S.I.), this laboratory has recently been named after him as Dr. H.A. Khan Radiation Physics Laboratory.

A computer laboratory has been developed in the Physics Department to provide computing facilities to the students of other departments as well. Presently we have a local Area Net work with a Pentium - 133 as a file - Server. Facilities for research in computer software development at M.Sc. level using the Assembly Language, Basic Fortran, and Pascal and C++ are available. We also have Micro - Computers for providing training to the Undergraduate students.

It is a matter of great pride that 30 alumnae have been decorated with National Civil Awards so far. Most of them have played a key role in the conduct of Atomic Explosions and in firing of Ghauri Missile etc.
