We are pleased to present GCULIB
BULLETIN, the first publication of Govt. College University
Libraries Lahore. The GCULIB BULLETIN will
provide useful indexes of Journals/ Magazines and Newspapers, Reviews, Online
Resources etc. The Indexing & Abstracting services are very much
essential and helpful to locate the required information in this era of
information explosion. The purpose of this publication is to facilitate and
enable the users to locate the required information with an easy and
systematic way. We hope this service will fulfill the information needs of our members
as well as other libraries. WE ARE

GOVT. COLLEGE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES: AN OVERVIEW
Introduction:
Government College University Lahore Library came
into existence in 1872. The University Library consists of two main branches
Fazal-e-Hussain Central Library and Postgraduate Library with the affiliated
eight departmental libraries. Library fulfills the needs of more than 5000
students, teachers and researchers.
The Library has introduced many
advance services to cope with the ever-growing information needs related to
teaching and research activities. We have recently developed Government
COLLEGE UNIVERSITY LAHORE’S WEB SITE (http://www.gclahore.edu.pk).
The library has also developed
ONLINE RESOURCES web pages to compliment the rapidly growing variety of online
collections. We have also implemented an electronic library security system in
the Postgraduate Library. It is worth mentioning that this is the first ever-electronic security
system at any University in Pakistan. Qualified and experienced staff,
dedicated to provide intelligent and innovative services, operates our
libraries.
LIBRARY COLLECTIONS:
A- PRINT FORMAT
i.
The library has 1,48,863 bound volumes on its stock in
Central, Postgraduate, and other 8 departmental libraries.
ii.
Three English and three Urdu dailies are available in the library.
iii.
The library acquires 26 journals/ magazines of English and Urdu
regularly.
iv.
A valuable collection of former Indian Govt. Documents, reports,
gazettes, gazetteers and university calendars is arranged subject vise.

Library developed online resources section on college
web site to facilitate the users to access the different electronic resources
on the web. There are General/
Reference, Magazines and Serials, Newspapers, Books/ Online Books, Web
Searching and Frequently Asked Questions (faqs) sections
maintained and explored by
library professionals to fulfill the information needs of users. These online
sections provide numerous contacts almost in every discipline of academics.

READERS’
SERVICES:
CIRCULTTION borrowing
of library material for all registered users with different privileges.
REFERENCE SERVICE - active
help desks provide efficient and reliable services reference assistance in
person. Library also provides reference service through email.
ONLINE SEARCHING – Library
provides the facility to get connect online sources at both campuses, Central
and Postgraduate Libraries. Library also provides online resources of different
academic disciplines on the college web site.
USER EDUCATION - To
optimize the use of its resources and services library conducts information
literacy sessions for its users. This is conducted each year at the time of
fresh admission to the college. The professional staff of the library also
briefs visitors and delegates.
ONLINE PUBLIC ACCESS CATALOGUE – Library
Administration maintained terminals for searching online public access catalog
to enable users to search required information material in no time.
INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT - library
generates subject bibliographies for instructional support.
PHOTOCOPYING SERVICE Two self-service photocopying set up has
been installed in the both campuses (Central and Postgraduate) of library.
PRINTING facility
of laser/ dot matrix printing at both Central and Postgraduate campuses.
PRESS CLIPINGS Covering 12 major headings from three
National English Dailies published under the title ARTICLES OF INTEREST, dating
back to 1998. The press clipping headings are: Corruption,
Economics, Human Rights, International Issue, International Relation, India
Iran Relations, Kashmir Issue, Nuclear Issue, Pakistan Economics, Pakistan
India Relation, Pakistan Politics, Political Science.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PRODUCTS
AND SERVICES
Keeping in view the ever-changing user
expectations and trends in information and communications technologies the
library has developed an infrastructure to make optimal use of these
technological developments in all of its operations and services.
LIBRARY DATABASES: Library has
developed database using Library Automation and Management Program (LAMP) to cater the needs of its patrons.
Library is in the process to switch over new Integrated Library Management
System.
INFORMATION SEARCHING:

Within the Library
Users
may search OPAC terminals to search their required information material.
b.
Through World Wide Web - (Remote Access)
Library's website is a one-stop
information solution. It provides links to almost all academic disciplines like
Business, Economics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Sc.,
Psychology, Education, English, Linguistics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology,
Physics, Engineering, Islamic Studies., Medicine, Govt. Departments, etc. On
the web. The library administration maintained the following web pages to
provide latest and comprehensive information about library activities and
collections to the users through Internet.

NEW ARRIVALS: The bibliographic information of new arrivals at
library.
II.
GOVT. DOCUMENTS: An index with library reference pages of valuable
collection of former Indian Govt. Documents, reports, gazettes, gazetteers and
university calendars is arranged subject vise.
III.
UNIVERSITY PUBLICATIONS: Provide the information of publications of different
departments.
IV.
THESES/ DISSERTATIONS: The complete and latest information of theses/
dissertations of M.A./ M.Sc./ M.Phil./ Ph.D. Is available by department vise.
V.
SERVICES: A complete description of different services offered by
library.
VI.
PERSONAL COLLECTION: The link provides the information about the personal
collections gifted by different renowned personalities to the Govt. College
University Library with years and number of books.
VII.
ONLINE RESOURCES: These pages are related to web based information in
bibliographic/ contents/ index/ abstract/ full text form and also sub
categorized the following categories:
a.
General/ Reference : A vide range of information material
related to almost all aspects of life.
b.
Magazines and Serials: A vide range of magazines and serials
covered in this section related to every discipline.
c.
Newspapers: Provides vide range of links of newspapers of all
continents.
d.
Books/ Online Books: This section provides the links of online
texts available at different places worldwide.
e.
Web
Searching: Links
of all renowned and well-indexed search engines.
f.
Frequently Asked Questions (faqs): Govt. College University Library provides
the reference service in campus and through e-mail. This section provides the
answers of generally asked questions to
reference librarian.
The remote access catalog is under
construction and it will available to search by the Internet in near future.
