CENTRE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES IN PHYSICS
(C.A.S.P)

High Tension Laboratory was established in 1954 by Dr. Rafi Muhammad Chaudhry (Sitara-l-Khidmat) to carry out experimental research in Atomic and Nuclear Physics. The principal research facility was 1.2 MeV Cockraft and Walton Accelerator. The first Ph.D. degree in experimental Physics awarded by the University of the Punjab, was earned by Mr. Mustafa Yar Khan, a Research Fellow of this laboratory in 1967.

Recognizing the effectiveness and solution oriented thrust of modern approach in research, the scope of this research establishment was made more broad based and multidimensional in 1986. Dr. Muhammad Zakria Butt was instrumental in the establishment of Metal Research Laboratories, equipped with a microprocessor controlled Universal Materials Testing Machine (100 kN capacity), specimen embedding press, grinding and polishing machines, optical metallurgical microscopes etc. to study mechanical properties of crystals and their relationship with the microstructure. Laser Physics Laboratory was also set up to fabricate different types of Lasers, their operation and applications in Laser Spectroscopy and Holography. In addition to that, Organic Scintillator Laboratory and Atomic Collision Laboratory are also quite productive. In January, 1991 Board of Governors, Government College Lahore named this complex of research laboratories as Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics (CASP).

The M.Sc. (Physics) students of Govt. College, Lahore as well as of other Post-graduate institutions carry out research work under the supervision of highly qualified staff in the fields of Atomic and Nuclear Physics, Laser Technology and Solid State Physics. The alumnae of this Centre occupy positions of eminence in Centers of high technology, such as PAEC, Dr. A.Q. Khan Research Laboratories, Karachi Nuclear Power Plant, National Institute of Silicon Technology etc. The CASP is expected to start M. Phil & Ph.D. Programme soon. The construction of a new building comprising two M.Phil. Class rooms, four research laboratory rooms, one Computer Hall and a Conference Hall with attached lobby and offices etc. has been completed at the cost of Rs.38 Lacs. On 1 4th August 1997. The President of Pakistan conferred on Dr. Muhammad Zakria Butt the civil award of Tamgha-i-lmtiaz in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the field of Physics.
