DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY Prof. Shiv Ram Kashyap was the founder of the Department of Botany. He joined Government College as Professor of Botany in 1906. In 1912 M.Sc. Botany Classes were started under the chairmanship of Prof. Kashyap. He was instrumental in establishing the Herbarium which was furnished with plants from all over India, as well as specimens from Indonesia, China and Philippines. The collections of Liverworts and Mosses were regarded as the largest in the world. The Department also published a number of books still being used as reference material. In 1938, Kashyap Research Laboratory was established to pay homage to the dear departed Professor Kashyap. |

Of particular mention among the above mentioned Professors is Dr. Sultan Ahmed who won international fame in the field of Mycology. Prof. A.R. Zafar improved the Library and the Botanical Garden and established a Green House.
Recently three research laboratories equipped with instruments such as flame photometer, muffle furnace spectrophotometer, rotary shaker, cooled incubator, and camera fitted research microscope etc. have been set up and active research is being conducted in the areas of Anatomy, Ecology, Environment Science, Food Microscopy, Genetics, Mycology, Microbiology Pathology, Plant Tissue Culture, Plant Physiology and Taxonomy. Many exotic and rare plant species have been added to the Botanical Garden which extends over an area of seven acres. Work on the naming and classification of plants in the Botanical Garden has been completed.
